How to Use the AUDIT Questionnaire

Step 1: Explain the Questionnaire

In Creyos Health, the AUDIT questionnaire includes written guidance on the purpose of the assessment and definitions for standard drink amounts to help patients provide accurate answers.

Step 2: Administer Questionnaire

The AUDIT questionnaire contains 10 questions and only takes two minutes to complete. It can be administered in person through the Creyos Health platform on an in-office device or remotely through a provided link.

Step 3: Review Results

Creyos Health automatically scores AUDIT results and provides reports. A score of 8 or higher is indicative of hazardous alcohol consumption.

Step 4: Reassess and Track

Healthcare providers can discuss results with patients and plan for follow-up assessments to track meaningful change over time.

Alcohol Abuse and Cognition: What's the Connection?

Research shows a strong link between substance abuse and cognitive decline. Alcohol abuse, in particular, can lead to serious brain conditions such as alcohol-related dementia and Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, which cause symptoms including memory loss, difficulty with problem-solving, and impaired spatial awareness.

Creyos can help provide a deeper understanding of the effects of substance abuse on the brain and support the development of recovery strategies. Find out how.

Frequently asked questions

Where did the AUDIT questionnaire come from?

The AUDIT questionnaire was developed by the WHO in 1989 to assess three domains related to alcohol use: alcohol intake, potential dependence on alcohol, and experience of alcohol-related harm.

Who uses the AUDIT questionnaire?

The AUDIT questionnaire is commonly used by healthcare professionals, organizations, researchers, and individuals to assess and measure excessive drinking and alcohol use disorders.

How is the AUDIT scored?

The AUDIT is a self-administered questionnaire that takes about 2 minutes to complete. The tool contains 10 items that ask about certain alcohol-related activities in the past year, covering areas such as the frequency, amount, and harmful effects of alcohol consumption. Each response is scored from 0 to 4, then a total score is calculated with a possible range from 0 to 40.

According to WHO guidelines, scores of 1 to 7 suggest low-risk consumption, scores from 8 to 14 suggest hazardous or harmful alcohol consumption, and scores of 15 or more indicate alcohol dependence or moderate to severe alcohol use disorder.

How does administration and scoring of the AUDIT questionnaire work in Creyos?

When a patient completes the AUDIT questionnaire, providers get immediate insights through easy-to-read reports that combine questionnaire data with cognitive test results for a full picture of patient brain health.

Creyos can also use APIs to integrate with a variety of electronic health systems (EHR) and has a built-in integration with athenahealth. Our platform automatically collects, scores, and organizes results from each questionnaire and adds them to the patient’s EHR.

What behaviors does the AUDIT evaluate?

The AUDIT questionnaire evaluates behaviors related to alcohol consumption, including frequency and quantity of drinking and loss of control.

How can the AUDIT questionnaire support patients?

The AUDIT questionnaire should be used as a screening tool to assist primary care providers or mental health professionals in understanding alcohol-related behaviors and monitoring behaviors over time. Any conclusions drawn from the AUDIT should be paired with further assessment, such as clinical interviews and observations, additional mental health examinations or assessments, and evaluations of the patient’s level of distress, functional impairment, and/or family history.

What can the AUDIT questionnaire not do?

The AUDIT questionnaire can serve as a starting point for conversations between patients and healthcare providers about alcohol use, but it does not suggest a particular diagnosis or course of treatment on its own. AUDIT scores are meant as an aid to quantify and measure the presence and severity of symptoms and behaviors over time.

What can the MDQ not do?

While the MDQ questionnaire shows about 80% sensitivity across studies, it does not suggest a particular diagnosis or course of treatment on its own. MDQ scores are meant as an aid to quantify and measure the presence and severity of symptoms over time.
